Maple Weekend is a family event

The New York State Maple Producers Association presents the 10th Annual Maple Weekend on March 19-20 from 10am-4pm each day.

About 85 maple producers across New York State will be hosting open houses for the public to see maple production. This family-oriented event is sure to delight visitors of all ages.

All participants will be boiling sap into maple syrup and many will demonstrate maple sugar making. Of course, visitors can sample and purchase the maple products. In addition some of the sugarhouses will provide of variety of other activities to make your visit to them even more memorable.

The following is a brief overview of each producer's operation, plus their plans for Maple Weekend. To make it easier to find producers close to you, they are separated by county.

Albany County

    The sap collected from our 1,500 taps is processed through a 3’x12’ oil-fired stainless steel evaporator with a piggyback system. We produce about 400 gallons of syrup and our additional maple products include molded sugar, cream, jelly and coated nuts.

    Directions: From Albany take Route 20 to Route 146. Turn left to Altamont. Continue on route 146 west and about five miles past Altamont look for the Woodview Sugarbush signs.

Allegany County

    We have a new 24' x 32' sugarhouse with a 3' x 8' Algier oil-fired evaporator.

    Directions:  Go south on Rt. 243 to Buffalo Street.  Turn right into Rushford Village and proceed straight at blinking red light.  Go past the school to second left turn, Baldwin Hill Road.  We are 1/2 mile up Baldwin Hill on left.  We have a maple syrup sign at the driveway.

    Bob Biel has approximately 1,400 taps mostly on tubing.  He uses a 3’x10’s oil fired evaporator to make their syrup.  Bob is also a dealer for Algier Evaporator and Dominion & Grimm.

    Directions: Take State Route 19 to County Route 4.  Turn on Ballard Road and we’re about ¼ mile up on the left.

    Our family-owned restaurant has been open for more than 40 years. We serve our famous buckwheat pancakes with our own pure maple syrup that we produce in the basement of the restaurant. We are only open during maple season Tuesday-Friday from 9am-8pm, Saturday from 8am-8pm and Sunday from 8am-6pm.

    The Moore family opens their Pancake House and sugar shack every March through the end of April.  Our 5,600-tap maple operation is on tubing and man-made vacuum.  We use a reverse osmosis unit, a steam-away and a new high efficiency oil-fired arch.  Adjacent to the sugar shack is our pancake house, where we serve all-you-can-eat buttermilk pancakes.  We have decorated it with family antiques ranging from an oxen yoke to a 1910 wedding dress.  On Maple Weekend, we will have wagon rides to the sugar bush and sampling of our maple cream, maple walnut brittle, maple nuts and other maple goodies.  If you can't make it maple weekend, our restaurant is open every day (except Mondays) from February 25th through April 20th.

    Family-owned Wright Farms has been in business since 1840, with five generations of Wright's producing maple syrup and maple products on the farm. Currently, there are over 7,000 taps both in buckets and plastic tubing. A modern sugarhouse, containing a 6-foot by 16-foot wood fired evaporator with a steam away system, is used to produce 1,300 to 1,500 gallons of pure maple syrup each year. The weekend celebration will include boiling syrup demonstrations and samples of maple sugar, jax wax, and maple cotton candy. Watch the tree tapping demonstrations, join the children activities, register for door prizes and see the worlds largest maple syrup can.     The Duesler family has been producing syrup for 38 years.  In addition to syrup they make maple cream and maple candy with a full line of glass containers.  Sap gathered from 1,400 taps and is boiled on a wood-fired 4’x12’ evaporator with a 500 gallon reverse osmosis and filter.

    Directions: Take NYS Thruway to the Canajoharie exit.  Take Route 10 North for seven miles (just past Ephratah Firehouse) and turn right onto Mud Road.  The sugarhouse will be about 1.5 miles down the road on the right.

Genesee County

Jefferson County

    We’ve been producing the finest syrup in Jefferson County for more than 20 years. We have about 3000 taps, about 1,000 roadside and 2,000 in the woods. We use the latest equipment and techniques starting with a 6' X 16' wood-fired evaporator, air injected to burn wood more efficiently. We use ultra violet light to help remove bacteria from the sap before it is boiled. We also have a pre-heater and filter press. During sugaring season we pack syrup into glass and plastic containers. In the off season we reheat the syrup in barrels and then pack the syrup fresh just as if it was made that day .

    Directions: From Route 81 take exit 42, turn right end of ramp onto County Route 66, go about 4 miles turn left onto County Route 63, go about 1 mile yellow house on right just past Ramsey Road (follow signs from Route 81).

    We are the 4th generation of maple producers in our family. Our facility overlooks the western slopes of the Adirondack Mts. It houses our 3'x10' stainless steel evaporator and steam-a-way.     This is a family-owned and operated, 100-acre sugarbush with 30 years of experience. We have 3,200 taps, mostly on tubing with vacuum, but about 750 are on buckets. We boil our sap on a 5’x16’ wood-fired evaporator in our new sugar shanty built in 2004. We will be giving samples of our products, which include award-winning syrup and granulated sugar. We also have sugar cakes, maple cream-butter-and jelly, maple lollipops and hard candy. For Maple Weekend we will have maple sno-cones horse drawn sleigh and wagon rides (weather permitting) and tours of our facility. Come out and smell the aroma of boiling sap and taste the freshness of spring.

    Directions: From Route 3 in Harrisville, turn onto Route 812 and go 6.5 miles. We will be on the right where you see the red sap tub with Pierce’s Sugar Spigot on it. From Croghan Stay north on Route 812 for 10 miles and we’ll be on your left. Watch for our signs.

    This fourth generation sugaring business is located in the foothills of the Adirondacks. Swiss'er Sweet Maple uses a combination of old and new methods to make our delicious, pure maple syrup. Our products include maple cream, maple candies and maple granulated sugar, sold in a variety of containers. We have gift arrangements for all your special occasions throughout the year.  On Maple Weekend we'll have Maple cotton candy available, along with a tour of the facilities, taste testing of maple products, and a variety of activities for the entire family.

    :  From Carthage take Route 126 East toward Beaver Falls.  Turn left on Swiss Road, go 3 miles and we’re on the right.  From Lowville take Route 812 North into Croghan.  Turn left on Bridge Street.  Go straight until you reach the “Y” in the road.  Stay to the left, that’s Swiss Road and we’re about 1.6 miles down on the left.  From Harrisville take Route 812 South into Croghan.  Turn right on Bridge Street.  Go straight until you reach the “Y” in the road.  Stay to the left, that’s Swiss Road and we’re about 1.6 miles down on the left.

    Yancey’s Sugarbush is a 5,500-tap, all-bucket operation that’s been in continuous operation by five generations of the Yancey family since 1844. Traditional methods are used with two horse teams pulling the sleighs or wagons to gather the sap and bring it to the boiling shed. Two large wood fired evaporators boil the sap into syrup at the boiling shed where the syrup is packaged fresh. Maple Cream and Sugarcakes are also available. Visitors are welcome throughout the maple season.

    Directions: From South and West: Take Route 812 or 126 to Croghan. Go north on Route 812 through Main Street, Croghan, to just past the village limits. Turn right onto the Belfort Road (County Route 10) and travel to the end (about 4 miles) where the road comes to a T. Turn right onto the Long Pond Road. The boiling shed is at the intersection of the Long Pond Road and the Fish Creek Road nearly 2 miles from Belfort.

    From the North: Going South on Route 812. South of Indian River, turn left onto the Old State Road. Follow it into Belfort and continue straight through onto the Long Pond Road. The boiling shed is at the intersection of the Long Pond Road and the Fish Creek Road nearly 2 miles form Belfort.

    The American Maple Museum is dedicated to preserving our pure maple syrup heritage. You’ll see artifacts from Indian times to modern on our three floors.     Our facility is located in a remote area of the Western Finger Lakes region, where the hills and valleys are some of the most beautiful scenery in New York State. The area's glacial geography and geology provide a wealth of sparkling spring water from our beautiful hills. This moist environment grows some of the best sugar maple trees in the northeast United States. It is from these trees that they collect the maple sap and process it into pure maple syrup and maple syrup products.  On maple weekend we’ll provide maple syrup tasting, sugar on snow and various snacks.  We will also lead hikes into our woods to see the sugar bush and tour our modern sugarhouse.

    the Link family produces pure maple syrup from their 2,000-tap operation, which features a traditional style sugarhouse.  They collect sap by using a modern vacuum system and trucking most of it to their sugarhouse.  The maple sap is then processed through a reverse osmosis machine and wood-fired evaporator with a steam away.  At full operation they can process 1,000 gallons of sap each hour.  Maple Syrup, maple cream, maple candy and granulated maple sugar will be available as will samples of baked goods made with maple syrup.

    The Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (VVS) FFA student organization operates a maple production facility and retail maple store. Located at VVS Central School in Verona, guided tours of the sugarhouse and 1,000-tap operation are always available during the sugaring season. Maple equipment includes a propane-fired evaporator, automatic syrup drawoff, sap pre-heater, heat exchanger and reverse osmosis machine. The handicap accessible sap house is geared for educational tours with labeled signs throughout. Wagon rides to the nearby maple sugar bush are also available. The woodlot features a state-of-the-art maze of suspended plastic tubing, which collects the sap. The sap is collected and processed daily.

    Since 1957, the sugar bush at the Arnot Forest has grown to more than 2,100 taps and more than 40 acres. Production averages 500 gallons annually.  The original sugarhouse, built in 1956 is still in use today. Inside the adjacent Pancake House, folks can enjoy the sweet taste of pure maple syrup at its perfection. Tender pancakes, served with farm fresh butter, our wonderful maple syrup and a friendly smile, are the specialty of the house! For those of you with an extra sweet tooth, maple sugar and maple cream are always available. Leader equipment is available for folks interested in making maple syrup. Open February, March & April, Saturday & Sunday, 8-2pm. Special Maple Sunday Weekend hours are 8-4 pm, Saturday and Sunday.

    Gary and Martha Bray have a 1,600-tap maple operation. Visitors can see a variety of maple production processes ranging from the state-of-the-art reverse osmosis sap concentrator to the traditional wood-fired evaporator and filter press. Bray Farms, which is also home to a 300 dairy cows.  They will be demonstrating tubing and maple cream making.

    The John and Joan George family operate a fifth generation farm. Their 2,000 tap sugar bush all have buckets and covers. Their roadside sugarhouse features a wood-fired evaporator with blower system, reverse osmosis machine and filter press. Maple syrup and maple cream are available year round. The farm also features a 200 head custom heifer raising facility.

    We're a third generation family owned and operated maple production facility. Enjoy the crisp country air as you journey through the sugar bush on a horse-drawn wagon.     The Kirsch family has been producing and marketing maple syrup for 30 years. We have 3,000 taps on tubing and our new sugarhouse, built in 2002, has brought the operation out of the woods and to the roadside for everyone's enjoyment.

    The Merle family runs a 14,000-tap operation with a reverse osmosis sap concentrator, conventional evaporators and a steam away. Activities will include wagon rides to the sugar bush, demonstrations of portable band saw mill and tree tapping, Kids' Corner, calf petting, crafts and tour of the sap house. You can sample maple cotton candy, maple cream, maple mustard, maple apple butter, pepper jelly and pure maple syrup.

    Steve and Lee Perl are fifth generation maple producers who will share their syrup traditions and sugar making experiences with visitors. They will demonstrate maple tree tapping using both traditional buckets and the modern tubing system that they use for their 3,500-tap sugar bush. Visitors will see the reverse osmosis sap concentrator, wood fired evaporator and filter press. Samples of all their maple products will be available. The Perl family also operates a 350-cow dairy farm.

    The Siler family has been making maple syrup for 96 years.  At our sugarhouse we have a balcony that overlooks the evaporator, where the sap is boiled into 100% pure maple syrup.  We also have maple trees tapped next to our saphouse so you can see and taste the sap before it’s boiled.  We’ll also demonstrate how making syrup has changed over the years.  Siler’s Sugar Shanty offers maple syrup, maple cream, maple sugar and maple jelly.  We are handicap accessible.

    Douglas and Charlotte Wolcott’s farm is located in the scenic hamlet of Dale in the middle of the villages of Attica, Warsaw and Wyoming.  Wolcott Maple Syrup & Equipment's demonstrations can accommodate a large number of people. Their gift baskets feature maple syrup, sugar and crème.  Their facilities are also handicap accessible.  Open Sunday only.

    Greg started making syrup in 1973 when he and his dad tapped two trees alongside their driveway. By 1994, Greg was tapping 375 trees along Union Road in West Seneca. In 1996, Greg moved his syrup operation to its present location, where he has 800 taps on vacuum and an oil-fired evaporator with a pre-heater and steam hoods.

    The sugarhouse is part of a small collection of shops including a gift, accessories, furniture, floral shop and café. There will be tours of the sugarhouse, sap and syrup tasting as well as all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast. Facilities are handicap accessible and will open from 9am-4pm. Other activities include tractor-drawn wagon rides to the sugar bush and baby lambs to pet.

Maple products including syrup, cream and sugar will be available for sale and samples. They will be open Saturday & Sunday from 10-4 each day
